BA (Hons), Dance and Theoloy, PGCE, MRAD
What makes a good teacher at Bedales?
You have to be flexible in your approach here. It’s so busy and the students are working on so many projects at any one time. You have to be mindful of what they go through in any one day, I’d challenge any of us teachers to keep up with it for a week!
What are you trying to encourage and instil in the children?
To be open-minded and to think before they make judgements. We look at a lot of Avant-garde/fringe theatre work in BAC and A Level Dance. Work that makes them challenge their own pre-conceived ideas about themselves and the world around them. They certainly need to be enquiring.
Apart from your teaching role, what else do you get involved with at the school?
I am the choreographer for the whole school play. I run Bedales Dance Company in the spring term and last year I mentored a ‘Directors Cut’ piece based on ‘Hollow Men.’
In your opinion, what makes Bedales special?
Driving in to the Bedales estate this week hearing my toddler say “look mummy, that sheep has got a very long neck, I’ve never seen one like that before!”…..Alpacas, as you do, only at Bedales!
Who or what inspires you?
Steve Jobs and his speech to the students of Stanford University (watch the speech on Youtube) and my old Philosophy tutor Dr Michel Nevin who taught me that I know nothing.
Tell us something not a lot of people know about you.
I met my Husband on Cilla Black's Blind Date!
