Creative Studies

Aims

  1. To enable pupils to develop an appreciation of art and beauty.
  2. To encourage individuality, initiative and creativity.
  3. To help pupils to develop talents and good levels of craftsmanship through doing and making.
  4. To introduce pupils to a wide variety of materials and techniques.
  5. To develop a sense of 'otherness' through a spiritual and intercultural awareness.
  6. To develop pride in pupils' work through both collective and individual achievements.
  7. To encourage comparison and a critical evaluation of their own and others' work in a contextual setting.

Delivery

At Dunhurst the syllabus is delivered by means of major projects of approximately 10-13 hours duration in two areas of the department per term.

Projects in Art and Pottery are linked and involve cross-curricular aspects and a contextual framework. Bedales' Art department deliver the syllabus in a 12 hour carousel within the same framework, building on Block One and Two work. All areas put emphasis on observational drawing and at Dunhurst experiencing artwork out of the classroom is also strongly encouraged. Projects will involve gallery visits, workshops, artists in residence and trips abroad to aid critical and contextual aspects of the curriculum.

Design Technology is taught by staff across the two schools and pupils are introduced to computer aided design by means of CAD/CAM and prodesktop design packages, used in industry. Structures, balance, cams and movement, electronics, circuits, crocodile clips and simple soldering are incorporated in projects across both schools. All projects encourage pupils to explore the properties of materials and develop problem-solving techniques. Good craftsmanship is fundamental to all projects.

The Textiles' syllabus is delivered via the teaching of techniques such as sewing machine use, hand stitching, fabric decoration and learning to work within a design brief. The use of IT combined with Textiles is also strongly encouraged.  Pupils enter Block Three equipped to move into more complex 'design and make' projects where they will learn to work with flow charts and GCSE level presentation.
