English is approached in a very creative manner beginning with the children’s own ideas and language. Stories, poems and plays are generated by the children on a wide variety of subjects and children are encouraged to use their imaginative and descriptive powers when expressing themselves. The informal nature of the School means that children are encouraged to question, discuss and assess their own learning; becoming active participants rather than passive receivers.
It is the role of the English Department to awaken children to the power and excitement of language, both in their own speech and writing and in works of literature and it is through language that we explore and understand the world about us, we come to know ourselves and others and we discover how to learn and how to make choices and judgments. At the heart of this process is response to literature and there is an increasing use of literature as the children progress through the school.
Enjoyment in reading, the sharing of ideas and a sense of purpose and value in their own writing will develop children’s literacy more than anything; these are at the centre of our practice.
