There are 3 basic aims of the Dunhurst Geography Department during Blocks I and II. First, to complete the first 2 years of work of Key Stage 3 loosely based on the national curriculum, complementing the further study at Bedales which finishes at the end of Block 3 (age 14). This ensures continuity. Second, to provide foundations of geographical understanding and vocabulary leading into the Geography Bedales Assessed Course (BAC) but without pre-empting its material; the emphasis is on transferable skills and topics not specifically covered at BAC. Third, to encourage and develop a fundamental confidence, interest and excitement about the world and to place pupils' knowledge and understanding within relevant spatial contexts.
In Block I pupils have 3 x 35 minute sessions, which generously fulfil the minimum of 80 minutes each week suggested by the ISEB. In Block II pupils have 2 x 35 minute sessions reinforced by a session of Outdoor Work which has cross curricular relevance to Geography. All Geography is taught in class and through out of school activities and visits. There are no set texts used in the Geography Department. Pupils learn to use a range of resources, including maps and atlases, photographs, written and visual materials and ICT. Assessment is via regular preps (about 30 minutes every 2 weeks), associated Pupil review and testing.
