Information Technology & Computing
Years 4, 5 and 6 (The Groups)
Aims
- To build a comprehensive and solid foundation towards the 'Bedales' objective for every pupil to leave the school with an IT qualification, ECDl, GCSE, AS or A2 level.
- To enable pupils to develop ICT skills at a sufficient level to facilitate independent use of ICT both across the Curriculum and for 'Subject specific' ICT.
- To enable pupils to develop a balanced view of the broad range of applications of ICT systems and to recognise when their use is appropriate.
The Groups classes are studying seven schemes of work (units) based on ECDL and the National Curriculum for Key Stages 2 and 3.
These units are:
- Files, Folders, E-mail and the Internet
- Word Processing and Desktop Publishing
- Presentation Skills (Powerpoint)
- Spreadsheet Modelling
- Image Editing and Digital Cameras
- Database Processing
- Control Technology
View the Groups ICT handbook.
All schemes of work contain 'extension' tasks to accommodate pupils working at a more advanced level.
Years 7 and 8 (Blocks I and II)
Aims
- To fully exploit the potential of ICT as a teaching and learning tool
- To improve teaching and pupils' learning of Information and Communication Technology
- To enable all staff and pupils to confidently and effectively use the full range of information technologies on offer at Dunhurst
- To enhance teacher skills in the use of ICT to improve the delivery of their subjects
- To improve pupils' standards of achievement
- To improve teachers' and pupils' access to research materials via the use of the internet
- To have internet access throughout the school to aid research and communication skills
- To enable teachers and children to develop communications with the wider world using technologies such as e-mail and on-line resources
- To train teachers and other adults in the possibilities of technology so that they can broaden the children's horizons
- To enable children to use multimedia to present their work in school
Delivery
The course structure we have set up for ICT is based upon a series of projects for Blocks 1 and 2. Each project lasts about half a term (with a couple of exceptions). This has the intention of giving the children a good basic understanding of ICT applications ie Word, Excel etc, so that the students feel confident about their ability to use computers across their remaining subjects.
