Music

Aims

  1. to foster the growth of musical activity for all pupils through improvisation, composition, performance, listening, movement and ICT.
  2. acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding to make music.
  3. develop understanding and appreciation of a wide range of music in order that the student may make judgments of musical quality
  4. to present music that is stimulating and enjoyable whilst providing the student with sufficient scope for the development of musicianship
  5. to kindle a pupil's creativity, emotions, intellect and imagination, and to provide a means of expression in areas which do not easily lend themselves to verbalisation
  6. to develop a pupil's personal skills (co-operation, sensitivity tolerance) through making music with others
  7. to equip the pupil with the musical fundamentals that may form the basis of a leisure time pursuit later in life
  8. to make special provision for the pupils who are very gifted and for those who have learning difficulties
  9. to extend musical experience beyond the music classroom by:
  • linking music with poetry, drama, dance, art, film in the curriculum and in performance;
  • integrating music in the general curriculum - link with topic based work;
  • providing regular performance opportunies within the schools and seeking performance opportunities in the surrounding area;
  • attending concerts and workshops;
  • linking with Dunannie and Bedales for ensembles and music/dramatic works;
  • entering local and national competitions and festivals: Chamber Music for Schools Trust, National Festival of Music for Youth, festivals in Portsmouth, Godalming, Petersfield, Farnham, Chichester;
  • inviting visiting musicians to give concerts;
  • involving visiting music staff in curriculum music and school performances;
  • guiding students into holiday courses: NCO, IAPS, Youth Music Theatre.
