Public examination results, set out below, are placed within the broader context of Bedalians' overall achievements. We do this because our aims are ambitious, both academically - "to develop inquisitive thinkers with a love of learning who cherish independent thought" - and, more broadly, in terms of students' personal development. Having said this, our desire to develop inquisitive, independent-minded people with a good breadth of interests is no substitute for strong academic achievement, reflected in measurable ways - public exam results, access to higher education and successful careers. The intention with the information published here is to give prospective and current students and parents a better sense of Bedalians' various trajectories - at school and in their subsequent university and professional careers.
The 2011 results show that our students can achieve their full potential across a diverse range of subjects. For A Level, 73% of all grades were A*-B, a significant increase on last year, with the vast majority achieving the results required for their chosen higher education destinations. Bedalians secured places at universities including: Oxford, Cambridge, University College London, King’s College London, Bristol, Durham, Exeter, York, Brighton & Sussex Medical School, Nottingham, Manchester, St Andrew’s, art colleges such as Central St Martin’s and international institutions including UCLA and Brown in the USA. Seven of our 2011 leavers will be taking up places at Oxford and Cambridge; in addition a number of leavers will be applying to Oxbridge in Autumn 2011, having achieved extremely well at A Level.
In the Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs), GCSEs and IGCSEs, 54% of grades in 2011 were A* or A, five percentage points higher than last year. BACs create a rigorous, imaginative and enjoyable curriculum, as well as preparing students for A level study and subsequent application to university.
