Jay Green

Head of Drama, Bedales

BA, East Anglia

What makes a good teacher at Bedales?
The ability to know that everything matters but that nothing matters terribly.

What are you trying to encourage and instil in the children?
Encourage courage and instil intellectual ambition. And laughter.

Apart from your teaching role, what else do you get involved with at the school?
I direct the odd play. But I’m really waiting for the staff band to kick off...

In your opinion, what makes Bedales special?
The absolute lack of certainty about what a Bedalian is combined with the absolute certainty of its core values. If all faith is rooted in doubt then Bedales is indeed a holy place.

Who or what inspires you?
My children, my wife, Manchester United, Springsteen, Raymond Carver, Simon McBurney, Barbra Streisand and dogs.

Tell us something not a lot of people know about you.
In past lives I’ve chopped up horses, been a candy floss man in Bognor, trodden on Ray Charles’ foot (accidentally) appeared in the FA Cup (Preliminary Rounds 1 & 2 1985) and lived in Los Angeles, Paris, Vancouver, York and Oakham but I’ve always been a Londoner.
