Noted portrait artist, Rupert Bathurst, has spent two weeks at Dunhurst, Bedales junior school, working with all pupils from Years 4 - 8.
Rupert, who has been painting since he was six years old, creates highly dramatic work using a variety of media and is today a highly respected portrait artist. This is his second residency at Dunhurst and he has been working with pupils to give them all the opportunity to experiment with charcoal, acrylic paints and chalk in group-produced shared portraits. The pupils have found themselves standing on stools, manipulating bamboo sticks with charcoal taped to the end; painting with their less dominant hand; and even holding chalks in their mouths to draw. Rupert's inspirational teaching encourages free mark-making and inspires a new-found confidence for all who work alongside him.
Head of Creative Studies at Dunhurst, Elaine Hewitt says:
'Rupert's energetic and inspirational teaching has filled our pupils with artistic enthusiasm, giving them new insights into ways of looking and seeing.'
