Bedales announces concert by rising star of stage and screen on 13 May

29/04/2011

Ex Bedales student Johnny Flynn, who is renowned on the international folk scene with his band ‘Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit’, is to perform a concert on Friday 13 May, 7.30pm at Bedales School to raise money for the school’s John Badley Foundation bursary fund. Tickets are now SOLD OUT.

At the age of 13 Johnny won a music scholarship to Bedales, where he honed his skills on the violin, trumpet, banjo, guitar and piano. Afterwards he attended drama school in London. Flynn first became involved with the London folk scene after a trip to America inspired him to start a club night with Emmy the Great. He was influenced by New York's anti-folk scene with artists like Jeffrey Lewis, Diane Cluck and Langhorne Slim. In 2008 he released his first album ‘A Larum’ and in 2010 released ‘Been Listening’ with new record label Transgressive Records.

In addition to his music career, Flynn has toured the world with the all-male Shakespeare Company, Propeller (led by Old Bedalian Ed Hall) and recently performed at the Royal Court Theatre in The Heretic. Although still in his twenties Johnny is enjoying an amazing music and theatrical career and the Bedales community is very excited to be welcoming him back to the school.

Commenting on the concert, Headmaster of Bedales Schools, Keith Budge, said: “Johnny’s achievements since he left Bedales are impressive and we are proud of his obvious talent both in music and drama. I am extremely grateful to Johnny for offering to perform in support of the John Badley Foundation, so that more talented children like him will be able to benefit from a Bedales education.”

The John Badley Foundation aims to provide full bursaries for children who are unable to afford an independent education, and has raised sufficient funds for three beneficiaries to start at Bedales from September 2011, with more to follow through continued fundraising.
