Bedales appoints new Deputy Head

13/04/2010

Bedales has announced that its new Deputy Head from September 2010 will be Dominic Oliver, currently Head of English and head of Academic Development at Malvern College. This announcement follows the news that current Bedales Schools’ Deputy Leo Winkley has been promoted to the Headship of St Peter’s School, York.

Headmaster Bedales Schools, Keith Budge, said: “I am delighted to announce Dominic Oliver’s appointment into this key senior role. He brings impressive academic credentials to Bedales, having taught at Oxford University prior to taking up school-teaching and leading a large English Department at Malvern College. I am very much looking forward to welcoming Dominic and his family to the school, and to working with him to ensure Bedales continues to deliver a high quality and innovative independent education.”

“I would also like to pay tribute to Leo Winkley whose keen intellect, warm humanity and strong pastoral instincts have been great assets for Bedales – and will continue to be so for the rest of this term. No doubt he will have plenty of opportunity to use his Bedales-honed skills to full advantage when he takes up his new challenge in September. We will miss him greatly when he leaves in August and wish him well.”

Dominic Oliver was educated at the Sacred Heart College, Droitwich and Worcester Sixth Form College before achieving a First in English Literature at the University of Sheffield.  He then took an M. Phil in ‘Shakespeare and the Drama to 1640’ at St Peter’s College in Oxford.  From 1998 – 2003 he was a member of the University of Oxford English Faculty and Lecturer at St Peter’s College before starting his first school teaching job at the Royal Grammar School Worcester in 2004. He has been at Malvern College since September 2007.

Bedales comprises three schools co-located on its 120-acre estate in Steep: Dunannie pre-prep, Dunhurst junior and the independent co-educational senior school. The role of Deputy Head, Bedales Schools includes responsibility for the day-to-day running of the senior school as Managing Head.
