Bedales Encourages Intercultural Exchange with China

24/06/2009

Earlier this year, the new educational exchange programme between Bedales and Chuansha High School, Shanghai, was inaugurated. Eight Bedales students and Head of Geography, Colin Prowse, spent a week in Shanghai, visiting the families of students and attending lessons.

Colin said, ‘It was a fascinating visit and extremely valuable in terms of increasing cultural understanding.’

This term, Bedales was delighted to welcome the first group of Chinese students, who sat in on lessons, stayed in the school’s boarding houses and visited historic sites such as Portsmouth dockyard and Stonehenge.

Planning the exchange took well over a year and included an exploratory visit to Shanghai in February last year by three Bedales students and Thierry Drot-Troha, Teacher of Modern Languages, who chairs the school’s International Committee. The Shanghai link will open cultural opportunities to students and staff, and encourage dialogue on educational methodologies and philosophies.
