Bedales Goes to Town

06/03/2009

For the second consecutive year, 50 musicians from Bedales School gave a concert of chamber music at St Sepulchre's church in London. The National Musicians' Church (where Henry Wood, founder of the Proms, learnt to play the organ) is the largest parish church in the City of London. The ambitious programme included the orchestral music of Bach and Handel and choral works by Sir John Tavener and Thomas Tertius Noble.

The young students demonstrated a remarkable level of professionalism and confidence. Mendelssohn's Hear my Pray with 14 year old Georgina Wadstein as the soprano soloist particularly captivated the audience, whilst the challenging Rimsky-Korsakov piano quintet in B flat major was exhilarating, and earned rapturous applause.

"I'm extremely proud of our students", said Bedales' Director of Music, Nicholas Gleed. "They really enjoy performing and their immense talents shone through every work in this varied programme."

A member of the audience commented: "The standard of musicianship was fantastically high and the acoustics of the church made the whole experience even richer."

The lunch-time concert attracted an audience of over 200, with school children from London and as far away as Salisbury and Kent attending. The event raised over £700 in support of the restoration of the historic church organ, which was installed as part of the re-build in the late 1600s after the Fire of London destroyed the building.
