Bedales hosts London dance project
During the Easter school holidays, a group of 12-18 year olds from inner city London spent three days at Bedales Schools, taking part in a series of dance workshops and master classes. This visit was organised by London based charity, Greenhouse, which works with children living in areas of high deprivation.
Greenhouse was founded in 2002 by CEO Michael de Giorgio who wanted to give young people on a local housing estate something positive to do during the school holidays. From this, Greenhouse has grown and spread across London and today works with over 10,000 children in 31 schools and 7 community clubs. It provides full-time sport and performing arts specialist coaches to schools, teaching young people positive life skills, raising aspirations, developing technical skills and improving behaviour.
Current Greenhouse programmes include basketball, drama, football, judo, multi-sports, table tennis, volley ball and dance. The recent residential workshop at Bedales utilised the fantastic dance facilities as well as the surrounding environment.
Director of Student Welfare at Bedales, Becks Hobson explains:
‘This was a great opportunity for Bedales to become involved with the work of Greenhouse. I think the kids loved the whole experience. They came together for the first time from different schools across London and worked really well as a group. In between attending the different dance workshops, they collected eggs from our farm, built a bonfire, cooked their meals together and learnt Tai Chi. We’re looking forward to building on our relationship with Greenhouse and hosting future events.’
