Bedales Schools Celebrates Founder
Every October students, staff and parents at Bedales Schools come together to celebrate ‘Badley Weekend’ which marks the continued importance of JH Badley, who founded the school in 1893. Pupils at Bedales, Dunhurst and Dunannie traditionally take part in a ‘whole school effort’ which is based on the school motto Work of Each for Weal of All (or as Alexander Dumas’ Three Musketeers would say: ‘One for all, and all for one!’).
This year students at Bedales dredged the school lake; the Dunhurst working party prepared land for their new Outdoor Classroom; and the children at Dunannie joined in a variety of projects, including making a mosaic table using buttons and letters to spell out the school motto. Other activities such as apple-pressing, using fruit from the school orchards; tree coppicing; bulb planting; lantern-making; and an evening show in the Olivier Theatre also took place - with rousing performances from many notable Old Bedalians. A samba dance band ‘Bloco Fogo’ created a riot of colour and gave an infectious rhythm to events.
At Bedales, the theme for the weekend incorporated science and maths with the focus on astronomy. The ‘Explorer Dome’ from Bristol set up a mobile planetarium which provided the perfect backdrop to talks from Professor Chris Done (Department of Physics at Durham University) on ‘Black Holes’ and the ‘Apollo Missions’ by Dr Michael Truss, Maths Teacher at Bedales. The weekend of activities at Bedales was master-minded by Peter and Sylvia Coates.
