Bedales students prepare to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe
Bedales students are spending their summer break in rehearsals ready for their first ever performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival next month. Working with experienced professional Director Dan Herd and Head of Bedales Drama Jay Green, the students from the sixth form and Year 11 will be performing under the guise of the ‘Bombini Theatre Company’ with shows Tiny Dickens and Shakespeare Bingo from 8 – 20 August.

Commenting on the shows, Director Dan Herd said: “Tiny Dickens is a magical theatrical introduction to the Charles Dickens stories for children to enjoy but without the heavy in-depth storylines and complicated plots. It will take inspiration from books like Harry Potter and Horrible Histories and invite audiences young and old to actively participate in the Dickens tales. In Shakespeare Bingo the audience will literally play the game during this comedy show about a group of teenagers trying desperately to stage a ‘serious’ play but with none of the physical and emotional capacity to do so. One lucky audience member will come away with a prize.”
The students have been preparing the shows for weeks and there is a lot of excitement in the final stage of rehearsals. “This is our first fringe so it is a big deal for us” says student Freddie Wise who has now finished his A Levels and is planning to study drama following a gap year. “Although it is our first Fringe it doesn’t feel like it as we have been working on this project for so long and it has been a lot of hard work” comments student Tom Cotton who is planning to read Sociology & Philosophy at Leeds. “It is a great way to finish our time at Bedales by performing at the Fringe” adds student Lottie Gulliver who has an offer from York to read Music.
The students are involved in every aspect of the show – from choreography, stage lighting and management through to setting up the new theatre company’s website www.bombinitheatre.com. Commenting on the newly formed theatre company, Jay Green said: “Bombini is a bridge for our students to take their work outside of the school so that they can start to build an awareness of professional standards in theatre. It is a great opportunity to take their talents and creativity out into the wider world and this is good for their overall development. The Fringe is our first step and we hope to perform abroad next year and beyond.”
