Bedales Students Teach in Thailand

22/09/2010

Bedales students recently completed a three week visit to Thailand and enjoyed a variety of different educational and cultural activities including teaching English to Thai children in primary schools using different methods to introduce words to the children’s vocabulary. Outside the classroom the 12 students experienced an overnight stay in the jungle in bamboo huts, rode elephants, visited Buddhist Temples, completed a diving course on the Island of Kho Tao and swam in natural pools beneath waterfalls.

The students were given this rare opportunity of a gap year ‘taster’ by Bedales’ Director of Teaching and Learning, Alistair McConville and Head of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Carmody Grey. While teaching Thai children the Bedales students did a considerable amount of preparation to find the most effective method of communicating key words  which included using  dressing up and dance. The local children, aged from 8 to 11, were so enthused by this chance to learn, that they came to school at the weekend to take part.

Commenting on the visit, Alistair McConville said: “It was an enriching experience and one that will be remembered by students for the rest of their lives. Some of our students were so keen to go that they self-funded the trip: Christy Callaway-Gale and Laura Stewart organised a very successful Thai night at Steep Village Hall earlier in the year to raise money for the trip. They produced incredible food and enlisted the help of fellow Bedalians to wait on over 100 guests. While in Thailand, I was very impressed and proud to observe my own students teaching skills in action.”
Bedales students on the visit were: Sarah Qandeel, Christy Callaway-Gale, Tegen Evans, Laura Stewart, James Day, Tom Cotton, Jimmy Morris, Hugo Fell, Elliott Hills, Jay Goldsmith, Harriet Selka, Amber Woods, Frederick Markland.
