Bedales sub-aqua expedition
Bedales students recently embarked on a sub-aqua training expedition to Tenerife with nine students training for the ocean diver qualification from the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC), three students training for the Sports Diver certificate and two working towards their Dive Leader qualification.
The students aged between 14 and 17 were examined in both diving theory and practice in order to achieve their certificates in seas that were rich with marine life such as Atlantic Rays, Angel Sharks, Moray Eels and Barracudas. The divers were amazed to see underwater lava flows and hexagonal lava columns.
The students dived 10 times over a week’s stay, enjoying crystal clear waters. Dive leader trainees dived to 40 metres and explored a cave at 30 metres. In addition to diving, the students enjoyed a jeep safari to Mount Teide and discovered the history of volcanic eruptions and the amazing caldera at Las Cañadas, which is shaped like a huge bowl, 17km across, created when the magma chamber beneath the volcano collapsed 150,000 years ago.
Commenting on the expedition, Cheryl Osborne, Bedales biology teacher, said: “We all very much enjoyed the chance to practise diving in such clear and beautiful waters, which is a complete contrast to diving near the British Isles. We had ideal conditions so that students could focus on building their confidence and enjoying their underwater experiences. This annual visit is a great opportunity for students to develop new skills and to see marine biology close-up.”
