Democracy and Education - Discussion

06/03/2009

Parents and Old Bedalians will be joining students and staff at Bedales School on Saturday 7 March for a discussion on democracy and education.

Rob Reynolds, Director of External Relations, will start the discussion with a brief overview of the new Bedales website. Becks Hobson, who leads Bedales' work on 'Student Voice' will speak in addition to CNN's Business Editor and Old Bedalian, Alysen Miller. Alysen spent her formative years at Bedales as editor of the school's student weekly magazine, the B-daily.

Issues to be explored in the interactive session include:

Democracy

  • How can/does a democratic voice work in a community/organisation?
  • What, if any, are the limits of democracy within a school?
  • Does a school experience really prepare you for the wider world?

What can I change?

  • What should we be doing to improve sensible participation?
  • How can we encourage students to have “ears” as well as “voice”?
  • How can you understand better which battles you can win?

Atmosphere

  • How can or should the student body influence the atmosphere at Bedales, or more generally an organisation/community?
  • How can we encourage students to influence their own learning?

Opportunities

  • How do we raise awareness of opportunities at Bedales?
  • How do we encourage students to make best use of them?

Expectations

  • What are the expectations of parents of:
  • education
  • education at  Bedales?
  • Are these expectations different from 5, 10 or 20 years ago?

Rules and values

  • What is the purpose of rules? How do they reflect the values of a community?
  • How should students be involved in evolving and supporting the rules?
  • What is the relevance of school rules in the context of the real world? - similarities v differences.
  • What are our agreed shared objectives to encourage proactive involvement in 'education'?

The discussion forms part of the AGMs of the Bedales Parents' Association and Bedales Association to which Bedales parents and Old Bedalians respectively are warmly invited.
