Thirty one pupils from Dunhurst School, the junior school at Bedales, spent five days visiting Andalucía in Spain, taking in the sights of Granada, Seville and Córdoba, where they immersed themselves in the Spanish culture, and Moorish art and architecture.
This Art and Modern Foreign Language trip brought to life the language and culture which the Year 7 and 8 pupils have been studying in class.
Head of Creative Studies, Elaine Hewitt, explains:
‘The pupils found themselves immersed in the Spanish language from the outset and it was impressive to see them poring over the Spanish dictionaries to buy spices and trinkets from the Arab quarter and order food from stalls.’
The trip included visits to the Alhambra, a magnificent Moorish fortress built against the backdrop of the snow-clad Sierra Nevada mountains; and the Mezquita in Córdoba, a Roman Catholic cathedral originally built as a mosque. The pupils worked tirelessly with their sketchbooks to capture the magnificent arches, fountains and tile work.
Elaine adds:
‘Our pupils impressed other tourists with their ability to quietly and enthusiastically focus on drawing examples from the stunning architecture around them.’
