Dunhurt's PE Teacher to run the London Marathon
Ryan Walsh, PE Teacher for Bedales Junior School, Dunhurst, is counting down the days to the 17th April when he will be running in the Virgin London Marathon in aid of children’s charity CCHF All About Kids.
Ryan is passionate about the charity, which exists to provide severely disadvantaged children aged 7-11 with a range of residential activity, respite breaks and ongoing contact. The aim is to improve the quality of their lives, recognise their potential and achieve their goals in the safest possible environment. Many of the children come from backgrounds including poverty, isolation, neglect and abuse, some are young carers or a sibling or parent and some have suffered from bereavement or family breakdown.
Ryan, who ran in the Great South Run last year, has been training hard for the marathon in-between lessons and coaching sessions at Dunhurst. He needs to raise at least £1500 and is encouraged by the support he has already received from friends, colleagues and Dunhurst’s pupils.
Commenting on the challenge, Ryan said: “Although I know it will be hard, the experience will be exhilarating. To cross the finish line having helped a charity as important as CCHF is my aim and I am really looking forward to the race. CCHF All About Kids is a lifeline to a positive childhood experience for children who often live in areas that are rife with drugs, gang culture, violence and crime. The charity doesn’t receive any statutory funding and relies totally on the generosity of donors and supporters, so I am really pleased to be able to help them.”
Dunhurst Head, Penny Watkins said: “Our pupils and staff are full of admiration for Ryan and, as PE teacher, he truly is leading by example and in more ways than one. We will be cheering him along on the 17th as we know how hard he has worked in preparation for the big event.”
