Ole! Dunhurstians Learn Flamenco

21/02/2011

The Hall at Dunhurst, Bedales Junior School, more closely resembled a square in Seville when pupils were treated to a visit from Helena and Fernando of Cancion Gitana for a lesson in traditional Spanish music and dance, from Flamenco to the Rumba.

Helena dressed the children in traditional costume and then conducted a workshop of all the famous dance moves that represent the heart and soul of Spain. Accompanied by Fernando playing Spanish guitar, the children watched Helena perform Flamenco and then put on their own performances encouraged by frequent shouts of ‘ole!’

The workshop, organised by foreign languages teachers, Liv Burnett-Armstrong and Wendy Houston, intended to bring Spain alive for the children so that they could learn about the culture and history of Spain through music and dance.
Helena and Fernando also put on lectures, exhibitions and shows and this Saturday (26th) they will be performing at Chichester’s ‘Sketches of Spain’ event, which celebrates 500 years of Spanish music and dance.
