Plans unveiled for Badley Celebration Weekend 2011
Every year Bedales students, staff and parents across all three schools (Bedales, Dunhurst and Dunannie) dedicate a weekend in September (24-25) to celebrate the work of the school's founder John Badley through a variety of activities. For the first time this year, Bedales will be extending these activities beyond the grounds of the school by taking part in two community outreach projects. On Saturday a group of 40 students and staff will be going to Bidbury Junior School in Bedhampton, Havant to help landscape the school's outdoor learning area and on Sunday the same group will be visiting West Sussex homelessness charity Stonepillow in Littlehampton to help tidy up gardens, paint rooms and prepare for the charity's major fundraising event.
At Bedales the school community will be taking part in the Whole School Effort planting bulbs in the school's Orchard. Directors from the National Youth Theatre will help students produce a folk promenade performance with storytelling and music. All activities will be filmed for the production of a 30 minute film by students. A digital archive will be created including a still shot of every person present at the Badley Celebration, each one with a line attributed to them from the poem A Song of Myself by Badley’s favourite poet Walt Whitman.
Parents are welcome to get involved in the following ways: there are limited spaces available on Sunday evening for the 6.30pm or 7.45pm folk promenade performances (available on a first come first served basis); contribution to the digital archive by reading a short piece to camera; and forming a parent group of bulb-planters. Please email tbutcher@bedales.org.uk to register for these activities.
At Dunhurst, pupils, staff and parents will be celebrating on Saturday with a Whole School Effort project followed by a walk to the Poet's Stone.
At Dunannie the celebration will be held on Saturday (11.00am – 1.30pm) with pupils, staff and parents taking part in outdoor work, planting by the school's entrance and a recycle fashion extravaganza. Children and parents will spend the morning creating a piece of clothing, or a complete outfit using re-cycled materials. The culmination of this fashion frenzy will then be taken to the catwalk using our own Dunannie models.
