In a recent whole school assembly, students at Bedales School represented the main political parties and took part in mock elections. This was followed by a question and answer session by the real candidates for the East Hampshire constituency.
The purpose of the event was to recreate an election campaign and draw the students into political debate and discussion. Students assumed the roles of politicians and presented the opinions of the Conservative; Green; Labour; Liberal Democrat and Plaid Cymru parties to convince their peers to vote for them. Following the students, real candidates, Damian Hinds (Cons for East Hants), Adam Carew (Lib Dem for East Hants) and Howard Inglis (Lab for Meon Valley) presented their views. Jane Edbrooke (Lab for East Hants) prepared a ‘You Tube’ presentation which was played to the students.
Questions from the floor prompted discussions on investment in education, public services, democracy, free speech and foreign policy.
Head of History, Jonathan Selby, organised the event and said:
‘Students volunteered to represent the political parties and were then left to their own devices to research the political viewpoints: they were extremely convincing. The question and answer session by the real candidates provoked some lively discussion and even some cross party fire. They spoke with sincerity and the spirit and soul of the individual parties was clearly conveyed.’
