Shoes for Africa...the big count!

05/10/2009

Children at Dunhurst and Dunannie, the Bedales junior schools, have collected an amazing 150 pairs of shoes for the charity, ‘Shoe4Africa’.

The children started supporting ‘Shoe4Africa’ earlier this year after David Treacher, the charity organiser, visited both schools and explained the philosophy behind the charity. These shoes will be sent to children living in South African townships and not only will they provide an incentive for children to attend school, they will give protection and be a source of pride.

The nine sacks of shoes were counted by Year 2 pupils and Head of Dunannie, Katie Potter.

Katie says: ‘We’re really pleased with the amount of shoes we’ve collected so a big thank you to all the families who have contributed.’

Pupils at Bedales, Dunhurst and Dunannie also took part in the Peace One Day event. In 1999, film director, Jeremy Gilley brought his vision of global peace for one day to fruition, when he organised Peace One Day. This is now an annual event with the backing of every UN member state which asks for a commitment from governments, individuals and organisations – including schools – worldwide. Bedales Schools took up the challenge with characteristic vigour.

Throughout the day, pupils at all three schools discussed the significance of global peace. They then formed a human daisy chain in the adventure playground, to signify peace, and observed a minute’s silence. Year 3 children made paper doves to hang from the trees in the Dunannie playground and some children included a peace wish on their dove.

7 year old Leo wrote: ‘Every child has a right to play’.
