Students and Friends of Bedales shortlisted for Best of Petersfield Awards

27/08/2010

Friends and students of Bedales have been shortlisted for categories in the 'Best of Petersfield' Awards run by the Petersfield Post. They are as follows:

  • Serena Brett & Hannah Keenan for 'Best Child of Achievement' category
Bedales students Serena and Hannah have been instrumental in securing funds for the School’s Swaziland Project. The Bedales project is supporting Mbalenhle Primary School in Swaziland by raising money and helping to repaint classrooms, build three new classrooms, build a sanitation block, install running water and electricity, build a perimeter fence and most recently, build a hostel for orphans.
Serena and Hannah both organised events including a Silent Auction, sponsored silence, busking session and a cooking activity after school club that generated a total of seven thousand pounds for the project. After working hard to raise the money they then worked hard in Africa to help build the hostel in Swaziland. They dug trenches for new water pipes, repaired old pipes, painted walls and fetched water and sand to mix cement. This really was an achievement on an international scale with support from the School and the local community to make it happen.

  • The Theory of 6 Degrees (Joe Boon's band) for 'Best Local Band' category
The Theory of 6 Degrees: Scott,13,(lead vocals, bass) and Joe,13,(lead guitar, backing vox) met in 2006, playing live in the Houseband on BBC’s TMi show. In 2008 they formed the Theory of 6 Degrees with Jack, 14, (rhythm guitar, backing vox) and, later, Sam, 14, (drums) at Realistic Rock, Epsom. They write their own music, a mix of Indie/Rock, they’ve recently released their 2nd EP. Last year they were the Houseband for Radio 1’s Switch, were runners up in National Live and Unsigned Competition and won the National Yamaha Download Competition.
This year they played live on the BBC Introducing Stage, at Glastonbury 2010, the youngest band ever – after being talent spotted by Michael Eavis. Lead guitarist Joe Boon is a pupil at Bedales. They will be performing at Butserfest in September. Myspace.com/thetheoryof6degrees.

  • Ann Murray for ‘Best Arts Performer’ category
Ann Murray DBE gave a wonderful performance in difficult circumstances when she replaced her late husband, Philip Langridge, to give the inaugural Wilfred Brown Recital at Bedales with her friend and colleague Dame Felicity Lott. Philip died after a short, devastating illness earlier in the Spring, shortly after his latest appearances at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. For Ann Murray to continue to fulfil her own engagements was admirable but to take on a performance which was to have been given by her late husband displayed outstanding courage, generosity and professionalism. The large audience drawn from throughout the local community was clearly touched, amused and delighted by the programme delivered by these two outstanding singers, accompanied by pianist Terence Allbright.
The Wilfred Brown Recital Series commemorates the work of the distinguished tenor who lived in Station Road, Petersfield for many years as he pursued his fine career as a concert and oratorio singer, recitalist and broadcaster – having resigned his teaching post at Bedales on his thirtieth birthday.

  • Anne Claxton for ‘Best Contributor to the Arts’ category
Anne Claxton chairs the Bedales Arts Committee, bringing a community-wide perspective to our work. She is an enthusiastic and loyal supporter of all that we do in the arts programme, attending nearly every event in the school’s own programme and the visiting professional programme. We know that this same commitment embraces exhibitions, concerts, drama and general cultural life throughout the area. As a musician and former Head of Music at The Petersfield School, she has been an active contributor to the musical life of Petersfield for decades.

The deadline for nominations is 5pm Friday 27th August. To cast your vote please email graeme.moir@thepost.co.uk. When voting please put your full name and contact details on the email form (required to make the vote official).
