We give children the opportunity to see themselves as valued individuals, with a sense of self-worth and confidence, belonging to a welcoming, safe, calm and fair community.
We provide the opportunity for children to discuss how they are feeling and give them strategies to manage their feelings. A non-judgmental atmosphere is promoted - it is fine to make mistakes and learn from them. Adults make use of specific praise and act as good role models of social conventions and interactions.
Children develop a respect for their own cultures and beliefs and learn to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse multicultural society.
We offer a variety of teaching and learning styles in our PSHE sessions and these include assemblies, circle times and working towards golden time. (See page General Information – Behaviour for our ‘Golden Rules’ that promote positive values for the whole school community.)
In circle time pupils are able to discuss issues or solve problems in a safe group. The social skills of sharing in a group, taking turns and joining in with other children playing a game, are encouraged. The children are given the opportunity to make choices and solve problems for themselves, adults support children’s ideas and use open ended questions to encourage the generation of new ideas.
We encourage the children to take part in a range of practical activities eg charity fundraising, planning of special school events such as assemblies, concerts and productions.
Visiting speakers including for example vets, dentists and representatives of local churches and religions, and many more make the children aware of the wider community we live in.
