Profiles of recent Old Bedalians

I left Bedales in 2010 and am in my first year studying Mathematics at the University of Leeds. Whilst at Bedales I participated in several of the musical ensembles including the Choir, Chamber Choir and Orchestra and have continued my love of music at university by joining an opera society as well as a jazz and blues club. In particular, the jazz club allows me to reminisce about the amazing evenings spent in the theatre during many of the performances in the Bedales jazz series, I think I only missed one or two during my five years.
Opera society has allowed me to continue acting as well as I loved acting at Bedales and took part in whole school plays, directors’ cut pieces and took LAMDA lessons as an individual. Particularly memorable was the Oedipus Rex tour to Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a truly unforgettable experience. I have also kept up my Aikido training at university, a hobby that I took up in Block 4 and continued right the way through to 6.2 at Bedales. Sadly there is just no replacement at university for bread baking and people are much less open to the idea of getting up at 6.30am, but I always thought the smell of wood smoke mixed with fresh dough and Peter’s chipper greeting made it worthwhile. However all those early mornings spent kneading have at least taught me how to make pizza bases which are the envy of all my flatmates and made it easier to survive the occasional all-nighter when I haven’t quite finished my work!

I left Bedales in 2010 and have been working and travelling since. Having just returned from a three month trip to Australia, I plan on spending the rest of my summer gardening, picnicking, painting and walking around Kew Gardens or a combination of all three, before starting at Sussex University where I will be studying Biomedical Science. I enjoy the small things in life, so my time at Bedales was simply delightful. I miss walking around the grounds and seeing the lambs skipping about, bread baking, walking to poet's stone for the 6 am sunrise, picnics, making a fuss for people's birthdays, the library. I was also involved in other activities such as dance, stagecrew, girls football and the dissection society.

I'm currently in my first year at Exeter University studying joint honours in French and Spanish, so I only left Bedales last summer (2010). I had a fantastic five years at Bedales and shared some invaluable experiences so I'm glad to still have an open connection with the school. I was able to do everything I already loved; mostly playing sport (tennis/netball/hockey/swimming) and music (guitar/drums), as well as trying a new and pretty varied selection of activities....like bread baking at 6:30am. The relaxed atmosphere doesn't imply pressure and so I've learnt to motivate myself which has been extremely useful since starting university, giving me a necessary balance between 'work and play'.

After leaving Bedales I'm currently pursuing my gap year before going to Brighton University to study Automotive Engineering for four years in September 2011. Since leaving Bedales I have been a technical illustrator for Formula Two creating parts & build manuals. I have just got back from my travels - been to New Zealand and Australia for two months and now back to work to earn some money for hopeful future adventures.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bedales, and found it to be the defining moments of my life so far. Academically, I studied maths, physics and economics, while on the non-academia side of Bedales, I was very keen on sport and music. I played for the Bedales 1st team for Football, Hockey and Cricket, and enjoyed playing all racquet sports as well being a keen cyclist. Musically, I play the drums and it will be 11 years come September since starting. I was in several bands during my time there and had the opportunity of playing in the renowned Bedales Rock Show on more than one occasion. As for other hobbies, I co-ran a Formula 1 activity for younger students, was a member of BASS (Bedales Angling and Shooting Society), Maths society and 'Playing the Blues' with Graham Banks

I left Bedales in 2010 and have been indulging in a gap year ever since. I'm currently deciding on which university I will study Music at, in the hope that studying will terminate my gap year.
Whilst avoiding this reading like a lonely hearts column, my hobbies include attempting to read too many novels simultaneously, enjoying film, trying to guess composers on radio 3 and dragging my white dog through the filthiest patches of countryside.
When at Bedales, I distracted myself with performing in plays, planning elaborate Notices and co-writing a satirical magazine called 'Badley's Tricycle'. The thing I loved most about Bedales was its ability to mould itself to the individual; though cosmetically similar, everybody has their own unique Bedalian experience.

I was at Bedales from 2005 to 2010 and then went straight to study architecture at Westminster University. On my first day at Westminster, we had a freshers fair where we could pick the evening activities we wanted to do for the year. I was so used to having such an interesting array of activities at Bedales that I was quite disappointed with the university selection. I guess that is what I miss most about Bedales. There is always so much going on and by trying some of it out, I found out what I really enjoyed. I think my favourite activity was flamenco dancing for beginners… I’m still searching for somewhere in London that offers flamenco lessons as good as ours were...!

Mert Walley

I am reading American Studies at London Metropolitan University. I left Bedales in 2009. I enjoy playing basketball, football, watching films and am an avid museum goer. The main thing I loved about Bedales was the individuality and independent feel that the school itself promoted in each student, young and old. Whilst I was at Bedales I was the captain of the basketball team in my last year, manager of my year's football team, a member of the school council, green committee, food committee and IT committee.
