Ruth Tarrant

Head of Economics, Bedales

MA Oxford (Hertford), MA Warwick

What attracted you to Bedales?
I've got a fascination with innovative, and slightly quirky, teaching techniques and thought that the school would be good place to make use of my approach. In my first week of teaching at the school, we've already used Play-doh, dressing-up outfits and some classic rock songs to illustrate economic concepts.

What were you doing previously?
I've mainly been on "mum-duty" for my two little boys for the past few years, along with lecturing in intermediate microeconomics for the Open University, and designing and delivering the teacher CPD courses for a fabulous small educational company called tutor2u - which has just been nominated as one of the top 100 small businesses in the UK by the O2 and Smarta combination, and is in the running to win the overall prize. I'll be continuing to wear all of these hats at the same time as teaching Economics at Bedales.

Who/what inspires you?
My favourite  economist, Dan Ariely, who, in overcoming some serious personal adversity, has become one of the world's most famous behavioural economists. If you haven't yet read 'Predictably Irrational' then you should!

Tell us something not a lot of people know about you.
I was a previous holder of a world record in tap-dancing with Roy Castle! And I'm running the 2012 London Marathon.
