The Orchard Building wins a Royal Institute of British Architects national award
The Orchard Building at Bedales (architects: Walters & Cohen) has won a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
national award 2006. It is one of only five winners in the RIBA South region and ranks alongside buildings at two Oxford colleges,
among others.
RIBA Awards are given for buildings that have high architectural standards and make a substantial contribution to the
local environment. The awards are given out annually and have been running continuously since 1966. The panel from the South
Region visited the school on 28 March to assess the design, suitability and sustainability.
The RIBA Awards Group judges said of the building: “This is a high spec but not indulgent scheme and an extremely
sustainable one too – costing considerably less per square metre than schools in the city academies programme.”
The Orchard Building is now in the running for further prizes, including the coveted RIBA Stirling Prize.
