1. Reception went on a ‘Sculpture hunt’ around the grounds of the school as part of their art work this term. They have been exploring 3D work and making some of their own reptile sculptures from newspaper and also learning how to model with clay.

2. The children in Reception have been planning the sorts of environments that they might go through on a ‘Reptile Hunt’. They have used a variety of media to create pictures of these environments and have then written their own class story to perform in an assembly, based on the book ‘We are Going on a Bear Hunt’.

3. Reception had great fun performing their assembly to an audience of parents and children! They added sounds and words to retell a story written and illustrated by the class.

Visit to Haslemere Museum
Reception children had a wonderful visit to Haslemere Museum
to do a fossil workshop as part of their project on ‘Under the Ground’. They were very good detectives and were keen to discover how ammonites were made.

After studying the fossils carefully, they made replicas using plaster of paris and clay. They were also able to handle a wide variety of fossils, rocks and minerals housed at the museum.

After their visit to the museum, the children were keen to record what they had seen. They observed fossils at school using magnifying glasses to see that extra detail. They used pastels to draw them carefully, including as many details as they could.

Trip to the Weald and Downland Museum
Reception had an enjoyable trip to the Weald and Downland Museum at Singleton this week. The children responded well to the challenges of a long day trip and showed interest and enthusiasm, asking questions and making good observations. They were able to spend some time exploring 'hands on' building activities including arched bridge building, hanging tiles, finding out about wooden joints and sieving to separate different sized stones. They then split into groups and explored the wide variety of buildings on the site, finding out about life in the 'olden days' and different shapes and materials used a long time ago in buildings. Some of the class 'favourites' were the old school building, where they saw some familiar items such as a globe, abacus and bell and they imagined what it would be like to sit very still at a desk all day without being able to play with sand, water and blocks! They were also fascinated by the old fashioned toilets, the water wheel and of course the wonderful shire horses.
