Your help with any of these would be appreciated…

On a grand scale:

  • Greening Bedales. Simply working to the highest environmental standards in building the new Music School will add 10%, or £300,000, to the cost.
  • Helping us to support gifted students and broaden the social range of the school through bursaries from the Bedales Grants Trust Fund. The Fund has more than doubled in recent years, thanks to generous donations, but more is always needed.
  • Building for the future. The plans for the new Music School have been approved and it will be ready for use in September 2009. You could improve the sound insulation in one practice room for between £25 and £100.
We urgently need to adapt the Lupton Hall for its new purpose as an adjunct to the Library, for group work, presentations and private study with access to the computer network.
The next stage of the Orchard Development, the Art and Design building, is also high on our list of priorities.

More easily attainable:

  • Digitising the Archive. Bedales has a superb and important archive, especially of the school’s early years. Digitising it will both preserve it and make it more widely known. It will cost at least six months of solid work to digitise photos and loose documents, and six months more to make a start on the bound volumes, but £10 would cover an appreciable number of key photographs.
  • Providing artwork for the Main Dining Hall which properly represents Bedalian traditions and philosophy. We have a proposal to mount large blow-ups of historic photos on the walls; a section of one of these might cost £250.
  • Equipment to enhance the life of various departments, such as for filming school plays and drama classwork, some mirrors - for dance in the gym - and maybe black curtains to draw over them, a driving net for golf behind Boys’ Flat or an overhaul of the timpani for the music department.
  • Students have suggested that we install more benches in particularly scenic spots around the estate. This would enhance the quality of life for all members of the community and might cost as little as £200.
  • The scientists would like a portable digital planetarium for the three schools. We hire in touring exhibitions at the moment. They are hugely popular, particularly for the younger age groups, and they can create the spark of fascination that leads students to pursue the sciences in later years. We could do more with our own equipment available at all times. The cost is around £10,000.

The school will do all these things as and when money can be made available; your gift will get us there sooner.
