Simon Anholt, Old Bedalian and member of the Foreign Office Public Diplomacy Board
When did you leave Bedales, and what did you do next?
I left Bedales in 1979 and won a major scholarship to read Modern Languages and Literature at University of Oxford (and later added Linguistics and Anthropology).
What is your current role?
Policy advisor to several foreign governments and member of the Foreign Office Public Diplomacy Board.
In what way did your time at Bedales influence your education and career progression?
In many ways: a long-standing habit of inventing my own jobs rather than taking those already on offer; a tendency towards entrepreneurship; a respect for creativity; a very useful ability to speak frankly to those in power without nervousness or deference or ceremony; a real social and environmental conscience so I don’t have to pretend; a distaste for cant and formality and hypocrisy and empty talk.
What is your fondest memory of Bedales?
Early summer morning before Le Mans.
What is your favourite pastime?
Singing
What is your proudest achievement?
Proudest recent achievement: My two daughters getting places at Bedales.
In 2009, Simon Anholt was awarded the 2009 Nobels Colloquia Prize for Economics.
