Teacher of Psychology, Bedales

Psychology BSc, University of Hull
PGCE, Greenwich University

What are you trying to encourage and instil in your pupils?

I hope to inspire students with a passion for psychology and the self-discipline for independent study. Psychology is a complex scientific subject; I aim to make it accessible and fun.

In your opinion, what makes Bedales special?

Students here are never passive learners; they have both the confidence to express their opinions and to question the validity of explanations of behaviour. This makes teaching both more rewarding and more of a challenge than at some mainstream schools. Good teachers at Bedales are able to channel the energies of these very individual teenagers into productive learning.

Who or what inspires you?

People who do not allow the possibility of failure put them off trying are marvellous role models.  Anyone who is able to avoid the trap of materialism and to genuinely recognise its' irrelevance to happiness is also doing pretty well. As parents and teachers I feel that our goal should be to shape happy and fulfilled individuals.

Tell us something not a lot of people know about you.

I was married after two weeks engagement in Sydney on a hill overlooking the harbour (and am still married). I am a qualified aromatherapist (but I tend to keep quiet about this). I teach step classes at my local gym. I don’t dance enough.

What were you doing previously?

I was sales and marketing manager for a business publishing company.
