Made in the aftermath of the First World War, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is the quintessential German Expressionist film masterpiece. Robert Wiene’s distorted sets, sinister shadows and unnerving characters creating a paranoid, unreal world at a time of despair throughout Europe.
Minima are a four-piece group who have specialised in silent film accompaniment since 2006. Their instrumentation includes cello, double bass, classical and electric guitars, mandolin, autoharp, dulcimer, synthesizer, drum kit and assorted percussion. Their electrifying original soundtrack to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari strikes up an unexpected relationship with the images on screen, teasing out the film’s melancholy humour. The music stalks the film, the unique sonic palette complementing the film’s unsettling experience of mistrust and madness.
2020 is the 100th anniversary of the first screening of this film and, having performed this score many times in the past, Minima are very pleased to announce a newly reworked version of the sound track especially for this centenary occasion.
