This practical course will introduce you to forge work and fused glass techniques, in order to create a steel and glass garden sculpture.

The course will be limited to five participants.

All materials, plus lunch and tea/coffee, are included.

When

Monday 7 – Friday 11 July

Aim of the course

You will finish the week with a completed sculpture of your own design for your garden, as well as a few sample pieces.

What will you learn?

The course covers a wide range of steel and glass work skills. Initially we will cover the main skills needed to create a piece of fused glass. We will then move on to the skills of blacksmithing: to draw down, upset, bend, twist, hot cut and punch using hand tools.

This course is suitable for…

All abilities, including complete beginners. Physical strength is not a priority, the most important thing is commitment to your project and curiosity about technique and process. The focus is not just on mastering blacksmithing and fused glass techniques, but also responding in a creative way to both a design challenge and the properties of the materials.

Why choose this course?

This is an ambitious course teaching a comprehensive range of skills. You will be tutored by Lucille Scott, a highly experienced professional who has used glass and steel in her sculptures for many years. Extra support will also be provided by another blacksmith.

Timetable

This is subject to change, depending on progress, but expect the week to look like this:

Courses run every day 9.30am - 5pm. Early finish Friday.

Day 1 – Creating a coaster with basic glass techniques for fused glass. Basic forge work skills, including making a hook.

Day 2 – Continuing forge work skills and starting to look at design options.

Day 3 – Development of your design and making the glass element.

Day 4 – Mainly forge work, working on your final sculpture.

Day 5 – Mainly forge work, completing your sculpture.
