In Tuesday's The Telegraph (15/12/15), Headmaster of Bedales Schools, Keith Budge, argues that the knowledge-based school curriculum currently favoured by policy makers is a mistake, as those with the biggest stake in it succeeding – including students and employer organisations - want something different. Keith’s piece - 'Taking education back to the 1950s – a classic mistake' – draws upon a foreword written by education minister Nick Gibb for a Policy Exchange report, Knowledge and the Curriculum, in which he explains government’s rationale for educational reform. STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) and Russell Group 'facilitating subjects' are promoted at the expense of the arts and humanities, with a ‘good education’ dependent on a knowledge-based curriculum, to be transmitted largely from the front of the class by authoritative teachers to quiet, attentive children. Such an approach is advanced as a necessary antidote to the progressive mistakes of preceding decades, in particular the ‘arrant nonsense’ of the 2007 National Curriculum ‘Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills’ which was hostile to the teaching of prescribed knowledge.
