Bedales Impressive GCSE Performance at Top A* Grade

Posted on 25th August 2016

Bedales students are celebrating this year’s GCSE results, with an impressive 31% awarded at the highest A* grade. 55% of grades were A*- A and 94% were A*- C (view photos). As Bedales students study a combination of three different qualifications, these pass rates are a combined statistic for GCSE, IGCSE and Bedales Assessed Courses. No other school studies this unique combination of qualifications.

Exceptional performances included Tom Bradford who achieved 11 A*s, and Rachel Forsyth, Sebastian Wiener and U19 British sailor, George Ford, who all achieved 10 A*s at GCSE, IGCSE or Bedales alternative to the GCSE – the Bedales Assessed Course (BAC).

While revising hard, George was also training hard and was selected to be one of five sailors who represented Great Britain in the U19 single-handed sailing team for the European championships in Estonia this summer.

Headmaster of Bedales Schools, Keith Budge, said:

“Congratulations to Bedales students for these excellent results, all the more impressive as they are mainly the more challenging IGCSEs and Bedales Assessed Courses. We introduced our own courses 10 years ago as we were dissatisfied with the quality and challenge with most GCSEs. Developing our own UCAS-recognised Bedales Assessed courses, we are able to adapt and shape our curriculum to suit the needs of students. By focussing on the development of independent learning skills, Bedalians hit the ground running with their Sixth Form A level studies and are well prepared for university education.”

Bedales retains a compulsory core of five IGCSEs (English, Maths, double or triple award Science and a Modern Language) and uniquely, offers the BAC as a GCSE alternative which offers increased depth, more stimulating material, more active learning, less prescriptive syllabuses, and a wider range of assessment methods. The same grading system applies to BACs and students can choose from the following subjects: Ancient Civilisations; Art; Classical Music; Dance; Design; English Literature; Geography; Global Awareness (new in 2016); History; Philosophy, Religion & Ethics; Outdoor Work; and Theatre. BACs are internally assessed and moderated externally by experts in each field.
