The year is designed to instil the right appetites and dispositions to achieve success further up the school. In addition to work in the classroom, students are given prep to complete in their own time. Prep can be done at various times in the week, some of them designated and supervised. During the course of Block 3 it is expected that each student will establish effective working habits and an appropriate balance between academic work and other pursuits.

Bedales has a long tradition of leading the way in educational change. Our determination to do what is right for our students has led to the creation of a unique curriculum, Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs), for Blocks 4 and 5 with a range of innovative courses designed to complement a core of IGCSEs. The curriculum is built around a compulsory group of five core I/GCSE subjects and two non-examined courses, plus a choice of Bedales Assessed Courses and other GCSEs.

Well regarded by universities, the content of BACs is broad and stimulating, offering significant cross-curricular and independent-learning opportunities. Since we aim to develop a broad range of skills through the delivery of BACs, internal assessment includes a mixture of written assignments, presentations, projects and performances, together with examinations as appropriate. Each course is externally moderated.

In class, and particularly in the Bedales Assessed Courses, students are encouraged to question, to challenge, to think for themselves – visitors comment on a ‘no fear’ classroom atmosphere.

Within the curriculum, ‘Block Time’ courses have been designed to incorporate Wellbeing, citizenship, careers, current affairs and Global Awareness.

  • Harriet chose Spanish GCSE and Greek GCSE, and BACs in English Literature, Outdoor Work and History.
  • Alice chose French GCSE and Music GCSE, together with BACs in Geography, Art and Design.
  • Molly chose Spanish and French GCSEs, alongside BACs in Art, Philosophy, Religion and Ethics (PRE) and Design.
