The underlying object of Art in Year 9 is to provide a really accessible and enjoyable course for all abilities with an emphasis towards fun and individual creativity. In addition to this course is the availability of a generous provision of 'activity/after school Art sessions', that can complement the provision for Art at this level, if more ambitious projects are wished to be followed by pupils.
The Art department offers pupils the opportunity to investigate and gain Aesthetic experiences; Observation; Impression; Expression; Communication; Manipulation; Environmental; and Social and Art Historical. It is intended that during the course pupils should gain some experience of a wide variety of techniques within a sophisticated artistic development process comparative to the style of teaching offered by the school's Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs) in the following year.
Three termly projects are undertaken, that all have an interest in promoting observational drawing skills and the perception of images through individual creativity. In 2D Art, a range of inventive printmaking techniques are explored in collography. In 3D Ceramics, students experiment with a range of coiling, pinching slabbing, inlay and sgraffito. In Sculpture, the principles of modelling in 3D are explored with assemblage and the building of structures. The main objectives are to develop confidence in creative thinking and skills and to inform the pupils in making their choices of creative options for the following year.
In this unique BAC, pupils are offered the opportunity to explore and gain experience in Aesthetics, Impression, Expression, Communication, Environmental, Global Issues, Manipulation and Art Historical. The artistic process is explored to enable pupils to produce individual creative work from working practices using both traditional skills, digital, and conceptual approaches. The course will include Drawing and Painting, Sculpture and Ceramics, Printmaking and Photography, Illustration and Graphic techniques. In the second year pupils are given the opportunity to devise their own projects and form their own individual agendas.
Five (termly) projects are produced over the two year course in a range of media. Artist references and contextual work support the pupils work in the form of a 'visual diary'. The portfolio is judged from a selection of the three strongest projects and is currently assessed with the help of Winchester School of Art.
A Level Art offers something of value to a wide range of pupils, not only those who might choose a future career in the creative arts. This innovative course integrates practical work and Art History / Contextual Studies. This course is designed to be a mix of traditional, digital media and contemporary conceptual practices. The course is designed with Art School Foundation and direct entry degree courses in mind, and prepares students for later specialisation in such areas as Fine Art, Graphic Design, Printmaking, Photography, Ceramics, Illustration, Architecture, Fashion Design, Stage, Theatre Design, Film and Media.
There is an emphasis on the active keeping of sketch books for information gathering and note-taking and all students have the opportunity to attend life drawing classes each week. In addition to the course, there are complimentary enrichment courses that can be followed, in Photography, Life drawing, Sculpture and Ceramics. There will also be opportunities to visit galleries, museums, art colleges and other events.
The first year of the course will be dedicated to developing their skill base, and showing good practice and experimentation in a range of media. Two modules of coursework will be required for assessment at the end of the second year. One will be a 'personal investigation', where by pupils will explore an aspect of Art which has a personal significance, in both a written and practical form. The second is an externally set task where pupils will make a 'fifteen-hour piece' in exam conditions. In the Spring term they will be set a list of themes or starting points to which, they will be expected to respond. After at least a six-week period of preparation pupils are then required to produce a final outcome in a media of their choice within a 15 hour time period in exam conditions. Each year work made will be presented in an exhibition at the end of the summer term.
The course is taught in a mixture of group and individual tutorials. A member of staff works with each student individually to develop skills and to monitor progress.
The main objectives of the course will be to:
- Enable students to develop their skills and confidence in a variety of media
- Encourage students develop their own ideas and to work from their own personal initiative
- Support students to build up a portfolio of work should they wish to apply to an Art College or a specialised Art Course
