When did you join/leave Bedales?

I joined Bedales Prep, Dunhurst, when I was 11 for Block 1 (Year 7) in 2005 and I left Bedales when I was 18 in 2012, having completed my final year of school.

What qualifications did you gain at Bedales?

10 A* GCSEs
A* Extended Project
A-Levels: A* English Literature, A* Spanish, Distinction 3 Pre-U Music, Bronze award LAMDA, Grade 8 Distinction piano and Grade 7 cello. Thanks to the support of the school I obtained a choral scholarship to Oxford and a place in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain

What are your plans for the future?

I´m currently in Ecuador living with an Ecuadorian family and teaching in a rural community in order to improve my Spanish and immerse myself in their culture. In October I start a degree at Oriel College, Oxford studying Spanish and Linguistics. After that I´m not really sure, although I know I want to be using my Spanish. I´m very interested in translation and its role within society and literature so perhaps something that revolves around that subject. I´ve thought about the possibility of working in the Foreign Office or the EU. I think being involved in that line of work would be fascinating.

How did your time at Bedales influence your approach to learning?

I´ve always been incredibly determined and dedicated to my academic work and extra-curricular activities, but Bedales helped me to take my learning into my own hands and use that to create a fulfilling life for myself. I developed into an independent learner who organised time efficiently, so I could balance my academic work with the fantastic extra-curricular opportunities on offer at Bedales: from performing in plays, music concerts and participating in sports teams, to listening to inspiring lectures or seeing professional outside groups perform in Bedales´ own theatre.

How would you describe boarding life?

The easiest way to describe it is that I grew a family! As an only child I suddenly had siblings. I boarded in the sixth form, and the first year I was in Steephurst sharing dorms with girls across all school years. This really enforces a support network and the feeling of community that helps to define Bedales. In the final year school life intensifies even more and experiencing this while living with your classmates brings a depth to your friendships and creates ties between you that remain strong even after leaving.

How would you describe the Bedales ethos?

I think I´ve touched on this already but for me, Bedales is independent learning within an inter-dependent community. It´s about developing your personal skills/talents/love of a subject and using that to find your place within the community and contributing towards it.

What is your fondest memory of Bedales?

I grew up at Bedales, I spent the majority of my time there so I have extremely fond memories of those years, many of which are from boarding. However, the moment when I felt like I´d found my place within the community comes to mind. It was the end of Block 4 (Year 10) and we´d just finished the final production of Lord of the Flies, which had been an incredibly intense rehearsal process. We got a standing ovation: I´ve never felt anything that´s come close to that moment. It changed me somehow.

What is your favourite pastime?

When I´m on my own, reading and creative writing: I love how when I´m doing either I can be completely absorbed, wherever I am. However, I do love having a good catch up with friends: that never goes amiss!

10 A* GCSE
A* Proyecto Personal
