Learning through doing

Jo Webbern
Head of Dunannie

Encourage their first steps to be full of awe and wonder.

Dunannie is the starting point of the Bedales approach to education. Described as “an outpost of heaven down the road”, Dunannie inspires children by learning through doing in a community based on mutual respect. Children help to form the rules of caring behaviour towards one another and are on first name terms with teachers. Supported by inspirational and dedicated teachers, the children are encouraged to have confidence to take their own decisions as part of their learning and to formulate their own ideas in class. In taking an interest in their learning, children are more motivated, and this approach from the earliest of years supports one of our key aims: to develop inquisitive thinkers with a love of learning.
