An introduction

Welcome
A very warm welcome to Bedales School on behalf of all of us

Bedales is a unique and innovative co-educational boarding and day school nestled in the South Downs National Park in the south of England. Spanning ages 3 to 18, our students grow through a rich journey of learning, creativity and self-discovery. We value individuality, curiosity and meaningful relationships, fostering independent thinking and confident collaboration. Students become rounded learners as a result of our diverse curriculum that encourages intellectual endeavour and creativity both in – and beyond – the classroom. Bedales is a place where students are known, supported and inspired. I invite you to explore what makes our school truly special.

— Will Goldsmith, Head of Bedales School

Cultivating a community
of lifelong learners

Every child at Bedales is given the space to grow into the best version of themselves, prepared for a future that is both successful and meaningful.

Learning to live in a changing world

The world at 18 can be turbulent and demanding. We ensure every student discovers their talents, passions and identities with a strong sense of responsibility to others. Our innovative and liberal approach creates a properly rounded and relevant education for modern life.

A climate of openness and respect

Students choose what to wear and everyone uses first names – features of a culture valuing individuality with mutual respect as its cornerstone. We involve students in creating the framework within which the community lives, learns and grows, reinforced by traditions like handshaking in assemblies that help build lasting relationships.

Freedom breeds insight

We encourage individual expression. Students explore, contribute, consider alternative views and develop their own thinking. Age-appropriate freedoms breed insight – essential in our collaborative, less hierarchical world.

Fulfilled people, active citizens

We help students understand their subjects, humanity and their place in the world. Our job is encouraging them to work out where they want to go and to get there – comfortable in their own skins, knowing their minds, with moral purpose and the skills to act.

What it means
to be Bedalian

Being a Bedales student means feeling part of something unique.

Bedales chooses the bee to symbolise purposeful work, collaboration, and community - values that shape both our ethos and educational approach.

It’s a place where you can be yourself, follow your interests, and think outside the box. You’ll be challenged academically and encouraged to explore your creative side - whether that’s through art, music, drama, outdoor work, or looking at things differently in any subject domain. The teachers really get to know you and support you in finding your path, and the friendships you build here often last a lifetime. It’s a fun, supportive, and inspiring environment where you’re free to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow into the person you’re meant to be.

Former students - Old Bedalians - go on to lead rich and varied lives, with careers spanning everything from architecture and academia to the creative industries, music, fashion, science and social enterprise - often with many strings to their bows.

Our heritage
Bedales has a rich history that’s all about breaking the mould.

Founded in 1893 by John Badley, the school was built on the idea that education should be creative, independent, and prepare students for life, not just exams. From the very beginning, Bedales has embraced individuality and challenged traditional schooling. Our stunning campus reflects that blend of creativity and tradition. Over the years, Bedales has stayed true to its roots while evolving to offer a modern, forward-thinking education. It’s a place where history and innovation go hand in hand.

Governance & Policies

Our board of governors plays a vital role in shaping Bedales alongside the Head and senior leadership team. Learn more about how the school is led and explore the polices that guide our approach across the Senior, Prep and Pre-prep schools.

Bedales gave me the freedom to discover what I was good at and to get better at it. It also gave me lifelong friendships.

Bedales Estate

When Bedales founder John Badley relocated the school from West Sussex to Petersfield in 1900, his vision was to create an environment where creativity could thrive. Set in the Hampshire countryside, the school campus is more than just scenic - it's a working landscape that inspires learning and expression. From studios, workshops and laboratories to orchards, woodlands, and open fields, our facilities are designed to encourage hands-on discovery, artistic exploration and a deep connection with the natural world.
