Learning at Bedales is richly creative, encouraging curiosity and challenge without the pressure of excessively narrow testing. Students progress at or above age expectations through a curriculum free from rigid Common Entrance constraints. Our supportive tutor system further personalises learning, helping students develop discipline and self-motivation as they follow their passions - whether through Bedales Assessed Courses or more traditional courses.
We promote deep engagement by breaking down subject boundaries. From off-timetable focus days to inquiries and interdisciplinary projects, students explore integrated topics that stimulate independent thinking and foster a love for discovery and debate, equipping them with critical skills for further education and life.
Across all stages, Bedales learning is collaborative and social. Pre-prep and Prep children benefit from interaction with older peers and specialist teaching, while Senior students thrive in small tutor groups fostering strong relationships and academic dialogue. This inclusive environment builds empathy, communication skills and a sense of belonging.
There is an emphasis on environmental awareness and ethical decision-making, with nature and the school’s working farm serving as a vital classroom for outdoor learning. Embedded in our founding motto - work of each for weal of all - students are inspired to act thoughtfully and contribute positively to their community.

Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs) offer a unique and innovative alternative to GCSEs, designed by Bedales teachers to reflect the school’s educational ethos. These courses combine academic rigour with creativity, inquiry and personal engagement. BACs focus on in-depth study, coursework and other forms of assessment over exams, and offer students more choice - such as selecting texts or research topics. Subjects range across the arts, humanities and outdoor learning, and are externally moderated and recognised by universities. New BACs in Modern Languages and Science are currently in development. BACs develop independent thinking, collaboration and real-world skills, helping students take ownership of their learning. They complement core GCSEs in Maths and English Language and prepare students better for A Levels and life beyond school.
