Expressive Arts

Creative Expression & Visual Arts

At Bedales Pre-prep, children flourish creatively through an inspiring visual arts programme. They explore clay, paint, textiles, collage, photography and more, supported by skilled teachers who nurture individual expression. Artistic development is encouraged through hands-on experimentation, cross-curricular links, and exposure to different styles and media. Visits to galleries and working with visiting artists spark curiosity and appreciation of beauty and form. Children also study influential artists past and present, fostering an early understanding of creative heritage. Their ideas are celebrated, and every child is supported to develop confidence in their unique artistic voice.

Design Thinking & Making

Design technology at Pre-prep invites children to turn big ideas into tangible creations. From powered boats to rockets with circuitry, students tackle imaginative, purposeful projects individually and in teams. They learn design principles and adapt their work through critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration. Children use tools and materials thoughtfully and explore a range of construction techniques, developing a strong sense of purpose and care in their creations. Opportunities to work in Bedales Prep’s specialist art and design spaces deepen engagement and confidence. The subject encourages curiosity, invention and the practical application of ideas, laying foundations for future innovation.

Drama & Performance

Drama is a vibrant part of life at Bedales Pre-prep. Children immerse themselves in imaginative worlds through role-play, mime and collaborative storytelling, exploring both personal creativity and teamwork. They choreograph dances, plan performances and reflect on their work, building communication skills and artistic confidence. Assemblies and school productions showcase talent, often working closely with the music team. Drama also supports wider learning - children use theatre to unpack social themes, historical events and emotional understanding. Visiting performance companies and workshops inspire children to explore theatre as both audience and performer, strengthening appreciation of expressive art in all its forms.

Dance & Movement

Dance offers an enriching outlet for creativity and physical development. Pre-prep children are encouraged to move expressively, responding to rhythm, emotion and narrative. Dance lessons inspire confidence and collaboration, often involving group choreography where ideas and movement merge. Children experience various dance styles and perform regularly, sharing their work with parents and peers in assemblies and school shows. The integration of dance with drama and music celebrates the holistic nature of expressive arts. Workshops and visiting dancers introduce new techniques and bring fresh energy to the programme. Dance helps children develop poise, resilience and joy in self-expression.
