Inquiry-led curriculum
Across Years 1-3, learning is shaped by meaningful questions - such as “How do we care for living things?” or “What can the past teach us about kindness?” These cross-curricular inquiries link science with ethics, geography with storytelling, and history with personal reflection. Lessons are structured to foster curiosity, discussion and discovery.
Exploring through the natural world
Children deepen their understanding of geography and science through daily contact with nature. They investigate plant life cycles in our gardens, observe weather patterns and chart seasonal change. Projects often begin outdoors - sketching habitats, conducting soil tests, or following animal tracks - before being developed through classroom research and creative work.
History and PRE through experience and dialogue
Stories, artefacts, and celebration of festivals introduce key historical and ethical themes. Children learn about diverse cultures and belief systems while engaging in philosophical dialogue: “What is fairness?” “Why do we remember?” PRE is embedded through reflective discussions, journaling, and shared acts of kindness.
Co-curricular creativity and connection
Our co-curriculum - encompassing music, movement, drama, and outdoor learning - deepens each project. A topic on explorers might involve singing sea shanties in music, building model ships, and debating discovery in philosophy. These experiences culminate in performances, presentations, and community events, fostering confidence and communication.
Real-world learning
Children connect their learning with the wider world - caring for animals, contributing to community initiatives, and exploring the Bedales farm and campus. This integrated approach helps children see the relevance of their learning and their role within a broader community and planet.
