At the Pre-prep, we aim to develop strong, enthusiastic mathematicians who approach learning with enjoyment and resilience. Using the White Rose Maths scheme alongside Number Talks, our approach is grounded in mastery. Children are encouraged to explore multiple strategies, explain their thinking and focus on the process rather than just the outcome.

Teachers plan interactive, engaging lessons that reinforce mathematical understanding and help children apply their learning in a variety of contexts. From investigating number patterns to exploring shape, space and data, children learn to think critically and creatively about the mathematical world around them.

We make learning active and meaningful, with regular opportunities for real-world maths both in and out of the classroom. The school grounds are used to bring concepts to life, offering exciting chances for outdoor problem-solving and practical applications. Lessons include mental arithmetic, games, collaborative tasks and the use of technology to deepen understanding. Children develop fluency with number facts and learn to approach problems with a growth mindset, recognising that mistakes are part of learning and that perseverance leads to progress.

Flexible grouping allows teachers to tailor support and challenge to individual needs, and regular reviews ensure that children are placed where they can thrive. Additional support is provided whenever needed, ensuring every child can access and enjoy the richness of mathematical learning.

At the Pre-prep, we don’t just teach maths: we help children become brave thinkers who love exploring new ways to solve everyday problems.
