Outdoor Work & Forest School

Environmental education and sustainability is woven into everything we do and learning is joyous, meaningful and relevant. In Outdoor Work and Forest School, the children actively learn through first-hand experience.

Outdoor Work is uniquely Bedalian; here, the youngest children put into practice the school motto, 'work of each for weal of all', and understand the part that they play in our community. With a beautiful working farm on site, 120 acres of woodland, orchards, ponds and dedicated outdoor workspaces, our children have an unparalleled outdoor learning environment.

Supported by our Outdoor Work and Forest School teacher, all children learn gardening, traditional crafts and cooking. Their connection to the natural rhythm of the year is enhanced through seasonal activities. Children plant trees, collect eggs, make preserves, learn about blacksmithing, beekeeping, weaving and spinning wool and other traditional skills. We enjoy magical visits to see our new-born piglets, as well as experiencing lambing, sheep shearing and foraging for seasonal food on our beautiful estate.

At the Pre-prep Forest School children have opportunities to take their learning where they want it to lead them, supported by curious and caring teachers. Taking risks at Forest School empowers children to understand their own capacity and agency, with our shared storytelling and snacks around campfires helping to build a strong sense of community. Children appreciate the calming experience of being in nature and spend time discovering the woods for themselves, building their own lifelong.
