Prep approach to learning

Learning that sparks curiosity

Within our carefully designed curriculum we give children space to think, ask questions and explore ideas. Without the pressure of early standardised exams, they can focus on understanding, creativity and problem-solving. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, with opportunities across science, the arts and humanities. Every child is encouraged to find what excites them and to take ownership of their learning.

A broad, immersive curriculum

Learning with 'Head, Hand and Heart' is part of our everyday curriculum at Bedales Prep. Students spend time in nature - gardening, building, exploring - developing practical skills and confidence. They use our specialist Art, Ceramics, Design, Music and Drama spaces, learning to create and reflect and develop creative skills. Outdoor Work and sports encourage teamwork and independent resilience. It's hands-on learning that helps children connect with the world around them.

A community
that cares

Relationships matter here. We value kindness, honesty and collaboration, and we work hard to make school a place where everyone feels safe, included and valued. Daily tutor check-ins and one-to-one support help children feel known and understood, because we truly understand that when children feel supported, they’re more confident, more curious, and more willing to take risks in their learning.

Learning beyond boundaries

The curriculum is broad as well as deep. Unlike many prep schools, we are not bound by the Common Entrance syllabus, and though we are guided by the National Curriculum we are not locked into it. If teachers want to pursue a topic in depth, they can.

Much learning takes place through doing and making, especially through our extra-curricular activities programme. Trips, visits, workshops and speakers are important stimuli and are encouraged. Off-timetable days and special focus days are an important part of school life too, with curriculum areas coming together to work towards a single goal.

Greens

Students are introduced to independent study through 'Greens': timetabled self-study periods where they can complete prep (homework) in the library or pursue other activities.

Other uses of Greens may include further academic studies (including additional Modern Languages, extra Maths or English), the Arts (such as individual instrumental or vocal lessons and LAMDA classes) or sport (for example, tennis).

The number of Greens increases as students progress through the school and take greater responsibility for themselves, enabling them to tailor their academic and co-curricular programme to their individual interests and needs.

In Groups 1-3 (Years 4-6), students are usually taught English and Humanities by their class teacher and much is explored through this topic work, which makes it more interesting and relevant. There is specialist teaching in Maths, Science, Art, Design, Music, Physical Education, Drama, French, Spanish and Dance.

We encourage students to be aware of and care for their environment. Students have weekly double Outdoor Work lessons that build on a range of forest skills and outdoor learning.

In the Summer term, all year groups go away on residential camps for 'Camps Week', staying under canvas, in youth hostels or study centres. All trips complement the curriculum and introduce pupils to new situations and challenges.

Supporting each child

Together with a pro-active Learning Support Department, the tutoring system offers top quality support, academically and pastorally. Students meet with their tutors daily as well as on a weekly one-to-one basis throughout the term.

Staff hold regular discussions on whole year groups at which the social and academic progress of each child is considered. These dates will be published in the school calendar. Parents will receive feedback from these meetings by post the following week. Parents Evenings take place regularly throughout the year.

In addition to the above, Bedales Prep operates an open-door policy and parents are welcome to discuss any issues or concerns on a day-to-day basis.

Gifted and Talented

At Bedales Prep, we offer a wide range of in-class and extra-curricular activities for students of all gifts, talents and interests
to pursue their skills in an independent and inquisitive manner.

Our approach aims to encourage students to push and challenge themselves, and recognises that a child’s ability can grow and develop over time.

Learning Support

The Learning Support department embraces the Bedales founding principles of ‘Head, Hand, Heart’ and the development of the whole child is at the centre of the teaching and learning process. Learning takes place in an environment that develops inquisitive thinking and encourages independent learning.

Learning strategies are differentiated and multisensory to cater to the child’s individual needs and preferred learning style. Tasks are designed to build confidence, self-esteem and resilience and close links are made with the class teachers to ensure skills learnt in the LS lesson are transferred to the classroom.
