Bedales Service

Outdoor Work and Environmental Stewardship

Outdoor Work is an indispensable part of the Bedales journey, with students of all ages involved in maintaining our beautiful school environment through practical tasks such as gardening, animal care and estate maintenance. The hands-on approach teaches students to care for shared spaces and fosters lasting connections with the natural world.

Whether exploring in Forest School at the Pre-prep, growing their own food at the Prep or assisting on the farm through the Sixth Form Enrichment Programme, students develop a strong sense of environmental responsibility throughout their time at Bedales.

We want the children to find a connection with where they are in the world.
- Bedales Parent
Mentoring and Leadership

As students progress through the school, they naturally take on mentoring roles, supporting younger students and developing leadership skills. Sixth Formers serve as dorm mentors in the boarding houses and final-year students take on formal positions including Head Students, Subject Dons and Badley Mentors. These roles carry real responsibility for school life and the school community, preparing them to be effective leaders beyond Bedales.

Our students and staff demonstrate values that lie at the heart of Bedales: collaboration, responsibility and a commitment to making a positive difference."
- Will Goldsmith, Head of Bedales School
Community Service

From our very youngest Bedalians at the Pre-prep through to the Prep and Senior, our students recognise the importance of giving back to the community through regular service. Upholding our motto, ‘work of each for weal of all’, we want students to become compassionate individuals who contribute meaningfully to the world. Through volunteering opportunities in the local community, on-site projects and charity fundraisers, students develop authentic working relationships, valuable life skills and a deep understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

At Bedales Pre-prep, helping others and the environment is an integral part of the learning journey. Children are actively involved in a variety of projects to support the wider community, whether contributing to charity fundraisers by organising jumble sales or taking part in sponsored runs, collecting donations for Petersfield Food Bank or caring for the school environment by tidying litter and tending to the plants.

On Wednesday afternoons Year 3 students take part in dedicated service through a carousel of group activities. This may involve weekly visits to Steep Nursing Home to play games and read stories with the residents, helping in the Bedales Nursery or spending time completing Outdoor Work projects.
